Our History

The Solar Spark began as a public engagement project on behalf of the Supergen Excitonic Solar Cells Consortium, with funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and led by Dr. Neil Robertson of the University of Edinburgh.

We have now extended our activities and resources to include all solar cell technologies, from well-established systems like silicon and cadmium telluride to emerging alternatives like excitonic solar cells and luminescent solar concentrators, and are delighted to welcome our new sponsors, the Royal Society of Chemistry, who are helping us reach as many people as possible.

Our active public engagement activities in the past, present and future have been with partners across the UK, including research groups in Imperial College London, the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Loughborough, Heriot-Watt, Warwick and Nottingham; and organisations such as the UK Association of Science and Discovery Centres, the Scottish Schools Education Research Centre and National STEM.
